DASH the Gator
In 2016, the Our Lady of the Lake Amazing Half Marathon set out to name our mascot - a giant, blue alligator. We visited area schools and asked everyone in the community to help us give our gator a name. After receiving hundreds of name submissions, we found one that was just right.
A boy from St. James Episcopal Day School named Cannon Jack offered the name Dash, and it is the perfect name for our mascot. We made the announcement at St. James Episcopal Day School on April 7, 2017. When Dr. Kemmerly announced that the name was submitted by a kindergarten boy who chose it because it was his older brother’s name, Cannon Jack jumped up before his name was even announced. The kindergarten student from St. James Episcopal Day School was recognized with a celebration at his school and a free entry in the Kids Mini Marathon for the next year’s race.
Cannon Jack Duncan chose the name Dash in honor of his older brother Dash Duncan, a graduating college senior who played high school football at St. Michael in Baton Rouge and college football for Nicholls State in Thibodaux. Dash Duncan is coincidentally also headed to medical school in the fall.
“We loved the name Dash because of its reference to running,” said Shaun Kemmerly, MD, Chief Medical Officer of Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Health. “When we found out that the winner’s brother who inspired the name is on his way to becoming a doctor, it was clear that we picked the perfect name for our gator!”
